After a long gap i had the opportunity to visit the “Mahal”.
It always pains me when I see the state at which it’s being maintained – u can as well classify it as a Ruin, rather than as a “Palace of Historical Import”. Renovation work is on ever since I’d first visited the place (some 10 yrs back).
Despite all the dust, Pigeon droppings, graffiti-covered pillars and peeling paint-works, the “Mahal”, as its known thro’ out Madurai, radiates grandiose and inspires awe.

This Palace, constructed by the King Thirumalai Nayakar in mid 17th century, with the help of an Italian architect, is a classic example of the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. The piece de resistance is the pillar style. The intricate art work in the Dance-hall is a must-see.
