Went to the temple after a long, long time, courtesy Vicky. He got married there last week. The temple is quite well maintained with minimum of litter and scum even in this Sabarimala season.

Went for a stroll at Main Guard Gate this evening and captured a few shots too. The first pic is the spire of St. Lourdes church. It was built in 1812 and stands 200 ft tall.
Next is a famous Bas-relief from the Rockfort temple and the last pic is the night landscape of the city from atop the hillock.
After a long gap i had the opportunity to visit the “Mahal”.
It always pains me when I see the state at which it’s being maintained – u can as well classify it as a Ruin, rather than as a “Palace of Historical Import”. Renovation work is on ever since I’d first visited the place (some 10 yrs back).
Despite all the dust, Pigeon droppings, graffiti-covered pillars and peeling paint-works, the “Mahal”, as its known thro’ out Madurai, radiates grandiose and inspires awe.
This Palace, constructed by the King Thirumalai Nayakar in mid 17th century, with the help of an Italian architect, is a classic example of the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. The piece de resistance is the pillar style. The intricate art work in the Dance-hall is a must-see.
